The Ljubljana Review

Project of a bookshop and café conceived as a shared cultural space — not only to visit, but to take part in

How it started

This idea was born shortly after my friend Gege and I met in Ljubljana, where we were both volunteering. Up until that point we had followed similar paths — finishing our degrees, then spending time traveling, volunteering, and trying to figure out a different way of living.

Pretty quickly, we realized we were looking for the same things. A sense of community, spaces where people could meet, spend time, and where culture wasn’t something separate from everyday life.

We both felt a space like that one was missing — in the city center, but also in our own lives.

So we started talking about building it ourselves. Not as a distant idea, but as something real. A space we would actually want to be part of. A way to stop waiting and start doing.

Our mission

We want to create a physical space not designed around consumption, but around presence and community.

A place where you can come without a plan: to read, to write, to spend time, or simply to be around others. Where staying matters more than passing through.

Like the spaces that inspire it, The Ljubljana Review is imagined as something built collectively. Not fully defined in advance, but shaped over time by the people who inhabit it — through conversations, reading groups, and cultural events that grow out of the space itself.

There is no clear boundary between audience and participant.

What happens here is not only programmed, but emerges: a discussion that starts at a table, a reading that turns into a gathering, a small event that becomes part of a wider exchange of ideas.

Where this stands now

The space does not exist yet. We are currently in the early stages of exploration—clarifying the vision, securing funds, and developing a business plan.

Support this becoming real

The best way to support the creation of this space right now is by following the writing and becoming a paid subscriber on Substack.
